Calling Boating Enthusiasts to Diablo Lake
Diablo Lake: Popular Northwestern Destination
Diablo Lake is a water reservoir in the North Cascade Mountains in Washington state. It’s the lake created by the Diablo Dam, built in 1930, rans along the Skagit River and elevated at 1200 feet above sea level. The vivid turquoise color of the lake is mesmerizing, coming from the surrounding glaciers which grind the rocks into powder that cascade into the lake. The serene waters are perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and all sorts of water cruising. You can take boat tours of the lake if you’d schedule in advance, particular in the summer when trips are daily.
There is even an overlook where the views against the mountains are breathtaking. It is just off the North Cascades Highway, at Milepost 132. From atop here, you’ll see the historic Diablo Dam, and the Colonial and Pyramid Peaks. Camp sites are found by the lake with a few boat-in campgrounds. You can set-up tent and perhaps have a barbecue near a shoreline; one of the most popular and scenic is Colonial Creek. And if you prefer hiking, then take to the Diablo Lake Trail, a back trail near Marblemount north part of the lake, 3.8 miles long for all types of skill levels with just slight to moderate elevations you can easily handle. It’s designated a National Recreation Trail, and the views are fantastic. Diablo Lake is just one great tour experience whether you’re Washingtonian or otherwise.
